Monks from La Trappe founded Petit Clairvaux in Nova Scotia in 1825. After two disastrous fires, the small remnant moved to Providence, Rhode Island in 1900 and erected the Abbey of Our Lady of the Valley. In 1950 damages from a fire were so extensive that parts of the buildings had to be demolished. The brothers lived in temporary quarters until the new monastery, St. Joseph's Abbey, was ready for occupancy. The abbey sits in the rolling hills of western Massachusetts, close to the town of Spencer, ten miles west of Worcester.
Guest House:
The retreat house closely conforms to the atmosphere of the monastery. The celebration of Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours frame the structure for each day with a generous amount of time also set aside for private prayer, reading and contemplative quiet. Conferences are given by a monk, who is also available for private talks and confession. Breakfast, lunch and supper are included.
